9:00 departure from L’Aquila to cross Fucino plain, large Apennine basin of Marsica surrounded by the mountains of Sirente-Velino, where until XIX century, there was the third largest lake in Italy which was, after many efforts, drained to make it one of the most fertile lands of Italy. Photo stop to capture the 170 antennas of Telespazio, recognized as the first and most important "teleport" for civic use in the world. Arrival at Alba Fucens, the oldest town in Abruzzo, founded by Romans in 303 B.C., of which you can see the astonishing ruins of the forum, the amphitheatre, the basilica, the macellum, the baths, the aqueduct, the temples and the sanctuary of Hercules.
13:00 optional lunch in a typical restaurant in Celano and optional tour of Piccolomini Castle and of the museum inside. In the afternoon optional visit of Tunnels of Claudio, the greatest hydraulic Roman work built by the Emperor Claudio between 41 and 52 A.D. to fix the Fucino lake level and protect the nearby villages from the flood. Until 1871 it was the biggest underground tunnel in the world. On the way back you will cross the Rocche high plain, one of the most popular ski destination of the region located at 1.400 m asl.
